MALAT Sekt.
Our sparkling passion.
Gerald Malat is regarded as a true pioneer of Austrian sparkling wine:
As early as the 1970s, he began crafting sparkling wine from his own grapes – at a time when this privilege was reserved exclusively for merchants. In a legal battle with the Republic of Austria, the Constitutional Court ultimately ruled in his favor, paving the way for winemakers to produce sparkling wine from their own harvests.
In 1976, the first Malat Brut was created.
Then as now, it was crafted according to the traditional method: bottle fermentation, extended lees aging, and hand riddling.
Our history shows that Malat is not only Austria’s oldest producer of sparkling wine, but also a benchmark for quality, passion, and pioneering spirit in Austrian sparkling wine making.
Michael Malat – Preserving Tradition, Defining International Excellence
Michael continues his father’s tradition with great passion and international expertise. Through his meticulous work and accumulated knowledge, he has elevated the quality of MALAT sparkling wines even further. A particularly extended aging on the lees – up to 10 years – lends them refined effervescence, complex aromas, and extraordinary depth.
Under his leadership, cuvées such as the Blanc de Blancs Sekt Austria Große Reserve, Brut Nature, and Brut Rosé rank among Austria’s finest sparkling wines.
As a member of the Austrian Sparkling Wine Committee, Michael Malat played a key role in shaping the introduction of quality standards and the development of the Sekt Austria pyramid.
This significantly advanced the professionalization of Austrian sparkling wine production and strengthened its international recognition.
By combining tradition, craftsmanship, and the highest standards of quality, Michael Malat continues his father’s pioneering achievements on a truly international level.
